ABOUT THAT CHOIR

Currently in their 16th season, That Choir is one of Toronto’s most exciting professional a cappella ensembles, combining high-calibre performance with storytelling through choral music. Founded in 2008 by Artistic Director Craig Pike, That Choir now draws together close to twenty singers with diverse backgrounds in culture, work and study. Each season, That Choir presents a three-concert series of contemporary choral works, undertakes a range of professional development projects and touring opportunities.

Honouring their mission to support Canadian talent and the works of emerging composers, the ensemble recently launched That Choir’s Composer-in-Residence program, most recently led by Matthew Emery. This workshop program is dedicated to the development of new choral compositions by emerging Canadian composers. They have also performed contemporary works by Kathleen Allan, J. Scott Brubacher, Tyson Kerr, Cy Giacomin, and Matthew Emery, as well as Dora Award-winning musician Reza Jacobs

That Choir has toured nationally appearing at Canada’s national choral music festival, Podium; as featured guest artists at MusicFest Canada in Ottawa; and on a provincial tour of both Ontario and Newfoundland. They have received the Elmer Iseler Best Choir Award and placed first in both the OMFA Provincial Music Festival and FCMF National Music Festival. Their self-titled album was released in August 2022 featuring the music of Eric Whitacre, Ēriks Ešenvalds and Kathleen Allan. This past February That Choir went back into the studio with funding from the OAC and FACTOR to record their second EP to be release in the spring of 2025.

That Choir also maintains a strong connection with the theatre community in Toronto, having performed with Sir Christopher Plummer, Louise Pitre, Deborah Hay and Jim Mezon. They have also performed as the feature choir in the Game of Thrones Live Concert Experience, Hans Zimmer Live on Tour and The Legend of Zelda Symphony.

That Choir has been fortunate to receive support from the Ontario Arts Council, Toronto Arts Council, FACTOR and Choirs Ontario to help fund successful projects including: a choral symposium with renowned conductor and clinician Susan Quinn, and the hugely successful Toronto premiere performance of Ola Gjeilo’s Dark Night of the Soul.
